Marcella Picture

Marcella is a young mom from the East Bay who needed to start working right after having her first child. As Rendezvous Café’s first administrative assistant, she jumped right into helping the café create processes for taking catering orders, paying invoices and billing clients. She is now an accounting clerk for Quik Stop through the staffing agency Robert Half.


We wanted to share the news with you and tell you more about her story.

How would you describe yourself?

“I wouldn’t even know what to say! I guess I’m really easy-going, I’m pretty chill !
I am also good at exploring new fields. I am always ready to discover new things, especially since I don’t know what I want to do yet.“


Why did you choose the Business Administration program at JobTrain?

“Because I wanted to work in an office environment. Prior to JobTrain, I was a pharmacy technician but didn’t like the hours because I worked on weekends and nights. I wanted to work regular office hours, from 9 am to 5 pm, because I need to take care of my child, and I wanted to have time to do things in the day.”


What did you learn from your experience at Rendezvous?
“I learned more about bouncing costs and handling revenue. The different chefs would teach me how to calculate profit and markups, how much you need to sell products for in order to make it… I especially learned a lot with chef Campbell. He opened my eyes on various topics and made me aware of all the different costs involved in running a business. He showed me how to build invoices, and told me more about rules and regulations. Rendezvous taught me a lot of skills, like how to manage my time and multitask, making sure you’re always busy.”


What is your best memory of Rendezvous?

“I really did love the food there!

Also, I miss the people that work there: Campbell, Jen, Sarah…

Sometimes I got to cook in the kitchen with the rest of the team. I really enjoyed it! Even though it’s not what I’m going for in my career, I actually learned a lot about cooking and it was really fun.

When Jenny was a chef, I had a lot of fun with her. We had a close relationship. It was nice to come in. You have a buddy there. You can talk and get work done. “


 How did Rendezvous impact your life?

“It definitely impacted my life in a positive way. It gave me the skills I needed to find a job in the office field. Now I have my foot in the door in regards to accounting. I’d like to try that out, and if the time comes I’ll take classes to move up more. The experience opened up career opportunities for me.”

Meet Jeffrey

Age: 45

Origin: East Palo Alto

Position at Rendezvous: Apprentice Line Cook

Current Job: Cook at Google’s Bon Appétit Café


Jeffrey is 45 years old. He grew up in East Palo Alto. After completing Jobtrain’s culinary program, Jeffrey joined Rendezvous Café from February 2016 to March 2017 as one of our apprentice line cooks. He graduated from the program mid-March 2017 and is now working full-time as a cook at Google’s Bon Appétit Café.

How would you describe yourself?

I’m a laid-back kind of guy, carefree. I’m also punctual at what I do. I like to get things done on time! And especially, I love cooking. I really like what I do.


Where does your passion for cooking come from?

From my grandmother. I would always watch her cook when I was little.

I started by doing BBQs. They’re my favorite. I love grilling. And then I started cooking a lot. I made burgers, chicken, all kinds of stuff. My friends started buying food from me on Fridays, then on Saturdays, and in no time I was cooking for the neighborhood all week! That was maybe in 2008-2009. It all happened really fast, by word-of-mouth. I had a few long-term jobs before that. I distributed food for kids at school, and I worked in manufacturing. But then I got into trouble, so I had to stop. I would work, but I had to change jobs a lot. I worked hard to get steady. I’d spend my time cooking. I really wanted to go to school. One day I heard about the program from Imani, who used to be an apprentice line cook at Rendezvous too. Everybody told me I should do it. I applied for the program at Rendezvous and got accepted, and now I am at Bon Appétit.


What did you learn from your experience at Rendezvous?

I learned efficiency, how to do things well, and fast. I learned to be a team-player. I learned that there’s no limit to what you can do.


What is your best memory from Rendezvous?

My last day at Rendezvous. The team bought me a cake and we all had a really good time! I’ll miss the friendly environment.


How did Rendezvous impact your life?

Rendezvous, they really opened a whole other career path for me. I learned, I learned so much with Rendezvous. Rendezvous gave me the experience I needed to be where I am now. Now I’m good, now I’m where I want to be.
